Typolar (was: Jarno Lukkarila Type Foundry, or: Format Design)

Jarno Lukkarila (b. 1978) works mainly in graphic design. As the author of the typography reference book Tekstuuri: typografia julkaisijan työvälineenä (2001, Helsinki: CredoNet) he is one of the few writing about the subject in the Finnish language. He ran a typography-oriented design studio called Format Design in Helsinki and lectures part time on typography in Finnish design schools. Lukkarila was recognized as a type designer in the Morisawa Awards 2002, where his Xtra Sans typeface received the bronze prize in the Latin category. Lukkarila studied type design at the Royal Academy of Art, the Hague, in the postgraduate course Type&Media highlighted by the writing and letter design workshop of Gerrit Noordzij in 2000. Before this he graduated as graphic designer in Finland. Format Design became Jarno Lukkarila Type Foundry, and in 2010 morphed into Typolar, which is based in London. Typolar is run with Teemu Ollikainen and Saku Heinänen.

His type families, most of which start with an extreme hairline weight.

Xtra Sans: this won an award at TDC2 2007.
In 2009, he finally published his 66-style Egyptian family Tanger Serif. Images: Medium Heavy, Narrow, Wide Ultra light.
Calypso E (2010, E for Egyptian): a slab serif. Calypso I (2010, I for Italian) is a Victorian face.
Vinkel (Typolar) was not designed by Lukkarila---it is a mini-slab serif family by Saku Heinänen.
Altis (2011, Typolar). A readable sans family from Hairline to Black---ideal for information design.

About this font family

Inspired by New Transitional and Egyptian fonts Tanger Serif has elements of a sturdy work-horse text face and finely detailed headline font. A wide variety of widths and weights support many text sizes. Typically Narrow is used in headlines, Medium in body and Wide in smaller print.

Nothing is predefined, though. By combining the right widths with the right weights this traditional approach can easily be challenged. Let’s take an oversized (over 10 pt) body copy for instance. In conjunction with using a bigger size to enhance readability, a narrow and slightly lighter weight will save space and brighten text color. Tanger Serif Narrow is a slim normal rather than a condensed face.

As an Open Type “Pro” font each weight includes an expanded character set, small caps, old style figures, tabular figures, ligatures, fractions etc. All these are easily accessible through OpenType features.

Xtra sans, by Jarno Lukkarila. This font combines the sturdiness and compactness of a grotesk with strong broad-nib pen strokes. Use Xtra sans if you want to convey a classical yet contemporary quality to your design. At smaller sizes, the generous counterspace makes this font readable. At bigger sizes, its calligraphic details gives it enough character to stand on its own.

Founded on a rigid structure of modernist type, Calypso E has a determined tone without an authoritative tang. It is an updated interpretation of a Neo-grotesque model Egyptian with a hint of Humanist lightness in its forms. Seriously big x-height, square basic form and sturdy serifs create firm text regardless of the weight. This makes Calypso E well suited for various media, from sharp plotter images to low-res television screens.
