Data Rescue II тоже умеет работать лишь по сигнатурам, с определенными типами файлов: "If the file types you are looking for are
among the supported types, there is a good chance that Data Rescue will be able to find it. "
Видимо (не знаю деталей), файловая система "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" не позволяет ничего другого
( FAT, NTFS, ext2fs в этом отношении куда проще.
