one thing you need to consider when photographing weapons is the metal can often have hot spots. A Large defused light source or sources is required to provide even lighting over the scene. However this will depend on the look you are going for. I recently shot a Tommygun and used a set scene and light tent to shoot the parts when we broke down the guns. Quality of light is the key and practice makes perfect.
